Need a quick scary mask without having to go to the store? Native American Indians like the Iroquois and Cherokee tribes made their own masks by hand, and they rivaled anything from a Halloween store! Masks were used along with rattles to make noise to scare away bad spirits. Decorate this one with crazy hair, huge eyes and dark colors for an unforgettable costume!
What You Need:
- Raphia
- White construction paper
- Cardboard
- Hot glue gun
- Paint in red, yellow, black and white
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
- Pencil
What You Do:
- Have your child sketch an oval about the size of his head on cardborad, and cut it out.
- Help him cut out large circles for the eyes.
- Using the leftover cardboard, cut out a diamond and fold it down the center for the nose.
- Paint the nose shape and the mask with geometric shapes and crazy colors. The more creative you make it, the better it will look!
- On a piece of white construction paper, draw out circles that are slightly larger than the eye socket on the mask, and cut them out.
- Turn the mask over and glue the white eyes to the eye sockets, from the inside of the mask.
- Once the eyes dry, attach the nose to the front of the mask with hot glue.
- Arrange pieces of raphia to the top of the mask and glue them down.
Wear the mask or hang it on a wall to keep bad spirits away!
