Whether you're preparing breakfast in the great outdoors or from the comfort of your own living room, any morning can be improved with a helping of tasty french toast. Let your little chef get his hands messy as he dives into the sticky, sweet world of this breakfast staple.
What You Need:
- 12 slices of bread
- 5 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- Butter
- Syrup
- Stove or campfire
- Bowl
- Measuring spoons
- Measuring cup
- Fork or whisk
- Frying pan
- Spatula
What You Do:
- Help your child cut the 12 slices of bread in half. (Bread slices are cut diagonally for traditional french toast.)
- Let him crack the five eggs into a bowl. If he is new to this task, you might have him crack the eggs one at a time into a cup, and then, when there are no shell pieces, have him pour the egg from the cup into the bowl.
- Have your child mix the eggs with the fork or whisk.
- Help him measure and add the milk, vanilla, sugar and cinnamon to the bowl. The sugar insures that the French toast gets a nice brown crust.
- Have your child mix the contents of the bowl with the whisk or fork.
- Depending on the size of your frying pan, melt enough butter to coat the pan’s bottom.
- Now for the fun part. Let your child dip the pieces of bread in the egg mixture before quickly placing it into the frying pan.
- Use the spatula to check the underside of each piece. Help your child flip over the French toast once the bottom is no longer liquidy.
- Cook the other side.
- Place the finish pieces of French toast on a plate. Have your child pour on syrup before eating.
