Fish Bookmark

What You Do:

1. Have your child use a ruler and a pencil to draw a rectangle on the watercolor paper. Let him choose the size of his rectangle -- no exact dimensions need to be followed. Just make sure that the bookmark is small enough to fit inside a standard book.
2. Let him use his paint brush to sweep a thin layer of water on the rectangle.
3. Help him splash a bit of water into his blue, green and purple paints.
4. Have your child use his paint brush to swirl the water color paints onto the watered down rectangle.
5. While the painted rectangle dries, let your child draw a fish shape on the orange construction paper. Remind him that the fish will sit atop the painted rectangle, so he shouldn't make the fish too big.
6. Have him cut the fish out of the rectangle.
7. Let him use a black marker to outline and add details to the fish.
8. Have him glue a wiggle eye to the fish's face.
9. Make sure the painted rectangle is completely dry before allowing your child to cut it out.
10. Show him how to use a pencil to draw a wavy border inside the painted rectangle.
11. Have him cut the rectangle along the wavy lines. Now his water color ocean has some nifty waves.
12. Let him glue his orange fish to the top of the ocean waves.
13. Now all he needs to do is find a fun book for his fish bookmark to swim around in!
