How to Make a Windsock

What You Do

1. Help your child set her poster board out on a large, flat surface.
2. Let her roll the poster board up into a tight cylinder.
3. To keep her poster board in the cylindrical shape, help her glue the end of the sheet down. Show her how to hold the poster board together until the glue has time to dry.
4. Next, let your child use scissors to cut three strips from the blue streamer. Help her use a ruler to make sure each strip is about one foot long. 
5. Have her cut three more strips from the red streamer. Each strip should be about the same length as her blue strips.
6. Let her place a strip of white glue along the edge of two of her blue strips.
7. Next, have her attach the two blue strips to the inside of the poster board cylinder so that the strips hang out the end. Help her make sure the strips are across from each other inside the cylinder.
8. Show her how to hold the strips in place until the glue dries.
9. Time to do the same thing with the red steramers! Let your child place a strip of white glue along the edge of two of her red strips.
10. Again, have her attach the two red strips to the same side of the cylinder that she attached the blue strips. Make sure the red strips are across from each other and in between the blue strips. When she looks at the cylinder, she should see a pattern: red strip, blue strip, red strip, blue strip.
11. Let her hold the strips in place until the glue dries.
12. Have her squirt a strip of glue along the edge of the her remaining blue and red strip.
13. Help her wrap the blue strip around the end of the cylinder.
14. Let her wrap the red strip around the cylinder, two or three inches below the blue strip.
15. Help her use scissors to cut a length of yarn that is about three feet long.
16. Have her string the yarn through the cylinder.
17. Help your child tie the yarn's ends into a knot.
18. Let her hang up her windsock outside. Which way is the wind blowing?
