This year, it’s easier than ever to deck the halls by recycling an empty toilet paper roll and turning it into a sparkling tree ornament! With a few simple cuts, your child can construct an amazing 3D tree and decorate it with glistening gemstones, metallic pompoms and sequins. This activity will encourage cutting skills in young children and bring out the interior decorator in them!
What You Need:
- Toilet paper roll
- Green paint
- Paintbrush
- Craft knife
- Pencil
- Black marker
- Yellow foam sheet
- Hole punch
- Thin ribbon
- Sequins, glitter, metallic pompoms
What You Do:
- Have your child paint the toilet paper roll green, including the inside of the roll, if possible.
- Now make the top of a tree by drawing two triangles at the top of the toilet paper roll. Have your child make the bottom triangle slightly larger.
- Help your child carefully cut the bottom corners of the two triangles away from the toilet paper roll with a craft knife, following the pencil lines. Lift them out and crease them so they stick out from the roll.
- Outline the tree shape with a black marker.
- Show your child how to draw a star on yellow foam, and cut it out. Glue it to the top of the tree.
- Time to decorate the tree! Have your child use rhinestones, sequins and glitter to make it glisten!
- Punch a hole in the back of the toilet paper roll and string a ribbon through it to make a loop.
Hang the ornament on your Christmas tree and watch it shine!
