This year, take the seahorse out of the water and place it on your Christmas tree with this whimsical ornament craft! With a little crafty magic, the curve of a candy cane becomes a tail and a few glittery embellishments give it scales. You can even refill them after the candy gets eaten!

What You Need:

  • Candy cane
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Self-adhesive foam sheet
  • Ribbon
  • Adhesive dots or glue
  • Glass beads or sequins

What You Do:

  1. Show your child how to draw a seahorse head, about 3 inches high and 2 inches wide, on a piece of printer paper. If you need to, find a picture of a seahorse online to use as a guide.
  2. Have your child cut out the seahorse head.
  3. Place it on the back side of the self-adhesive craft foam sheet and trace this shape.
  4. Now flip the paper seahorse over, facing the opposite directions, and have your child trace it again.
  5. Cut out the two foam seahorse heads.
  6. Peel the backing from each foam seahorse head.
  7. Place the straight end of a candy cane against the sticky part of one of the foam seahorse heads, so that the tip is about 1/2-inch from the top and the candy cane's curve faces the same direction as the head.
  8. Cut a 6" piece of ribbon and fold it in half to make a loop. Then have your child press the two ends on the adhesive foam, just above the tip of the candy cane.
  9. Place the other foam seahorse head over the candy cane so that the two cutouts line up, sandwiching the candy cane and ribbon ends.
  10. Glue a small bead or sequin to each side of the seahorse head for the eyes.
  11. Tie a ribbon around the middle of the candy cane for a cute bowtie!
