Children can create a pop up card of themselves for someone special. Choose a favorite photo to use in the middle of this unique card and customize the front with a personalized portrait. We love this project as a Father's Day or Mother's Day card, but it can be used for any special occasion!
What You Need:
- Cardstock
- Scissors
- Clear tape
- Cardboard (try reusing a small piece from the side of a cereal or packing box)
- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
What You Do:
- Place a piece of eight by ten or larger cardstock horizontally on a table or other workspace. Fold like a book.
- Have your child draw a portrait of herself and dad on the cover of the card. Younger children who may struggle to draw people can break the portrait down into simple shapes. For example, the head is an oval, the nose is a triangle, the body is a rectangle or square shape, legs and arms are long rectangles.
- Ask your child to color the portrait with markers, crayons, or colored pencils. Discuss what colors she is using and why. Make it realistic or try an imaginative blend of abstract colors.
- Choose a picture of your child in which she is figured prominently in the center. Cut the picture out.
- Cut a piece of cardboard into a rectangle that is roughly two by four inches in size. Fold a tab at the bottom of the rectangle and glue or tape the rest of the rectangle to the back of the photo making a stand. Glue or tape the tab to the inside if the card in the center near the bottom. Fold down so that the picture will ‘pop up’ when the card is opened.
When finished, have your child write out a note or poem for the receiver of the card: mom, dad, grandma, or anyone special!
