This watercolor batik craft uses negative space to create a unique and beautiful pattern that has been used by artists for centuries. It lets your child explore the concept of pattern and composition while making a piece of fabric that can be used to decorate a room, wrap a gift or wear as a scarf! Instead of hot glue, we use regular white glue for an easy and safe alternative.
What You Need:
- Scrap paper
- Pencil
- Half yard of white cotton fabric
- Glue
- Watercolor paints
- Brush
What You Do:
- Have your child sketch some of her favorite patterns on a piece of scrap paper. Many batik designs incorporate a repetition of natural elements, such as animals and flowers.
- Now draw the pattern on the fabric with a pencil. When your child is finished, she can use a glue bottle and trace over the design in glue.
- Once the glue dries, your child can brush paint all over the fabric, using her favorite colors. Blue is the traditional color for batik cloth.
- After the paint dries, peel off the glue and erase the pencil marks to reveal your beautiful pattern.
