This watercolor batik craft uses negative space to create a unique and beautiful pattern that has been used by artists for centuries. It lets your child explore the concept of pattern and composition while making a piece of fabric that can be used to decorate a room, wrap a gift or wear as a scarf! Instead of hot glue, we use regular white glue for an easy and safe alternative.

What You Need:

  • Scrap paper
  • Pencil
  • Half yard of white cotton fabric
  • Glue
  • Watercolor paints
  • Brush

What You Do:

  1. Have your child sketch some of her favorite patterns on a piece of scrap paper. Many batik designs incorporate a repetition of natural elements, such as animals and flowers.
  2. Now draw the pattern on the fabric with a pencil. When your child is finished, she can use a glue bottle and trace over the design in glue.
  3. Once the glue dries, your child can brush paint all over the fabric, using her favorite colors. Blue is the traditional color for batik cloth.
  4. After the paint dries, peel off the glue and erase the pencil marks to reveal your beautiful pattern.
