Want a quick costume for Halloween or everyday pretend? Grab some art materials and show your child how to make a ferocious lion head mask with a paper plate. See if she can name each part of the lion’s head as she cuts and glues the parts on the mask. The lion can be scary or friendly, depending on her mood!

What You Need:

  • Paper plate
  • Brown tempera paint
  • Scissors
  • Brown pipe cleaners
  • Brown felt
  • Pink foam sheets
  • Glue
  • Pencil
  • Stapler
  • Elastic
  • Black marker
  • Cooked spaghetti

What You Do:

  1. Have your child turn a paper plate upside down and paint the back side brown. Let it dry completely.
  2. Hold the plate up to your child’s face and help her mark where the eyes should be positioned, and mark a 1” line for each eye.
  3. Cut out the eye holes.
  4. Have your child draw a small triangle on a piece of brown felt and glue it onto the center of the plate for the lion’s nose.
  5. Draw a W shape underneath the nose for the mouth.
  6. Next, draw a round tongue on pink foam, cut it out and glue it into place.
  7. Create the lion’s mane by gluing pieces of spaghetti onto the top of the lion’s head. Glue brown pipe cleaners to each side of the nose for whiskers. Let the lion mask dry completely.
  8. Measure your child’s head and cut a piece of elastic about the same length, and staple it to each side of the mask.
