Hone your child’s fine motor skills by creating these colorful and sweet smelling scented satchels. Along with exploring her crafty skills, she’ll create something that will freshen up a drawer or room!

What You Need:

  • Scraps of fabric
  • Ruler
  • Fresh rosemary or lavender
  • Scissors
  • Craft string
  • Craft needle
  • Scissors

What You Do:

  1. Invite your child to search the house for a piece of fabric to use for her satchel. She can use the same fabric for both sides, or pick one for the front and a different for the back of the satchel.
  2. Offer your child a ruler and invite her to measure two 4 x 4 inch squares of fabric – one for the front and the other for the back of the satchel. Not only is your child learning more about scents and sewing, she’s honing her math skills!
  3. Now your child can decide what type of scent she’d like her satchel to have. She can use fresh rosemary or lavender, which are both known for their soothing aromas.
  4. Invite your child to place the two pieces of fabric on top of each other and begin sewing with a three-foot length of craft string using a simple straight stitch, making sure to start with a nice, tight knot.
  5. Once she’s finished sewing three sides of the satchel, she can stuff her satchel with her selected scent. Invite her to use a scissors as needed to cut the sprigs to a smaller size.
  6. Now she can finish sewing the satchel and secure the final stitch with a knot. The satchel can now be placed anywhere that needs a bit of aroma, like a clothing drawer, backpack, or closet!
